Cloud Peak Energy is poised to mine the Crow Nation’s deposit of coal in Montana.

In a lengthy NY Times front page article today, A Fight Over Coal Exports and the Industry’s Future, about the push by the coal industry to find more ports specifically in the NW through which to ship its coal to Asia, it mentions that the Crow Nation seeks to get desperately needed revenue from entering into contracts for the mining of coal on its land and that they are quietly lobbying Tribes in the NW who see coal exports as a threat to their land and resources.   Finding options and solutions that will enable this coal to stay in the ground will be a critical factor in preventing the mining, export, and conversion to CO2 GHG emissions.

The article is worth reading on the larger topic, including how three out of the initial six port proposals have been dropped because of the opposition of environmental groups.    The work of SEA, Sierra Club, Power Past Coal, and all the partners and individuals standing up on this issue are making a critical difference.
